Celebrate Easter For Holy Week Not Just One Day
We are stepping into Holy Week – because Easter isn’t one day, it’s a week of events that led to Jesus becoming the sacrifice for all of us that accept Him as our savior. This post is to share the final week of Jesus Christ and the events that led to His death and resurrection. Plus a daily reading of verses from the disciples accounts of the Easter story because we need to celebrate Easter for Holy Week not just one day – not just on Easter Sunday.

A Timeline Of The Holy Week Events
Palm Sunday
Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem. In a loud voice people shout Hosanna which means “save us” or Savior and palm branches were waved and laid down. They praised Him as the “King who comes in the name of the Lord.” The people of Jerusalem knew that Jesus would save them but had no idea how.

Sunday
Tuesday of Holy Week
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, a place where olives were crushed. Jesus was very aware of what lay ahead for him. Isaiah had prophesied hundreds of years before that the Messiah would be “pierced of our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Tuesday
Maundy Thursday
On this day of the week Jesus shared the last supper with His disciples. The Lord’s supper can be summed up in His three words … the new covenant. (Luke 22:14-20) He showed God’s love before the last meal to the disciples by washing their feet. He broke bread with them, telling them this was His body and shared wine with them, telling them this was His blood poured out for them.

Thursday
Silent Saturday
One of the darkest days of Passion Week Jesus was laid to rest in a borrowed tomb. Saturday was the Sabbath and the proper burial of Jesus was put off until it was over. When it ended Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, both secret followers of Jesus, risked their own lives to prepare His body. And then the tomb was sealed with a large stone and a Roman guard was in place.

Saturday

Holy Monday
On this day Jesus curses a fig tree and turns the tables over in the temple. Jesus’ actions were far from His usual mild approach when He flipped those tables. Isaiah had written hundred of years before “I will bring them to my holy mountain of Jerusalem and will fill them with joy in my house of prayer… because my Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” (Isaiah 56:7-8) So it wasn’t so much the rows of product and price-gouging, but that all this left no room for the Gentiles and outcasts to come to God’s house that made Jesus flip those tables.

Wednesday Of Holy Week
Judas went to the chief priests and bargained with them for Jesus’ life. He agreed to hand over Jesus to the Sanhedrin for thirty pieces of silver, about a month’s wages for a laborer. And after this big deal was made with the religious leaders he looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

Good Friday
Jesus’ death had come. He was put through unlawful trials and sentenced to death by crucifixion. This was the worst punishment at the time. Jesus wore a crown of thorns, He was spit on, whipped and tormented before carrying His own cross to Calvary where He was nailed to the cross. At His point of death He breathed his last and darkness came over the earth; an earthquake struck and the temple curtain was torn in two forever giving us access to God and eternal life.

Resurrection Sunday
Early on this day Mary Magdalene, Joanna Salome, and Mary Mother of James discover the large stone rolled away. The Lord Jesus, the Son of God had risen from the dead! Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene and then four more times to others.

Overwhelmed By Love at Easter
I am always overwhelmed at Easter. The fact that He loved us so much that He willingly went through the most horrible excruciating death for us. That is a lot of love, folks.
And that’s where I get overwhelmed. By the amount of love, by the fact that He sees me (and you) as that person He wants to spend eternity with. That He finds you worthy, that He sees you. Even when we mess up (over and over), get angry and unloving, when we do anything that makes us feel less than.
The Fifth Sparrow No More
And that is where I want to remind you and myself that we are the fifth sparrow no more …
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Luke 12: 6-7
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Matthew 10: 29-31
Two sparrows are sold for a penny OR you can get a DEAL and get five sparrows for two pennies. I don’t know about you but there have been times where I feel like “THE FIFTH SPARROW.” You know, someone paid for four and the fifth was thrown in for free. Not even paid for. That’s a true feeling of WORTHLESS. The enemy would tell us that the OTHER FOUR were good enough to be bought with a price. BUT YOU are SO unworthy that you were just thrown in because you couldn’t be redeemed. But …
NO MATTER WHERE you are in life and WHAT you have done… JESUS HAS PAID the PRICE for YOU. For me. For each and every ONE of us. We have been BOUGHT and PAID for with His blood. But WE have to accept that gift. And make Him our Savior.
