What Is A Tier Tray?
First things first, before we get started there might be some of us wondering what is a tiered tray or tier tray? A tiered tray is a stack of plates (round or rectangle) that is used to organize or to display food, home decor, or holiday items.

What Do You You Put On A Tiered Tray For A Pastel Valentines Day?
Holiday decorating of tiered trays isn’t different than decorating for the every day. The decor you choose is just theme specific.
- Start with an anchor piece – this is your biggest piece on your tray and usually sets the color scheme and theme.
- I chose this clearance wood art from Hobby Lobby as my anchor piece. It determines that pink and blue will be in my color scheme and I’ll use swans in my tray.
Then add fillers to the different trays in your tiered tray that repeat the colors in your anchor piece.
Valentine’s Day Fillers For A Two Tier or Three Tier Tray
- Flowers – what is more appropriate than flowers on Valentines Day!?
- Candy – fill a jar with conversation hearts or red and pink Hershey kisses or use a wooden cutout of a conversation heart.
- Books – whether these are real or a faux book stack, use them to create height on your trays
- Wooden Bead Garland – these come in so many colors and are great for your trays
- Hearts – Wooden, fabric, metal, the sky’s the limit
- Vintage Flash Cards – These from Twigs & Fluff are perfect for Valentines Day but they come in every theme

Where Do I Put A Tiered Tray?
The short answer is everywhere! The long answer is in places where the tiered tray is in a place where it is useful for office organization or in the bathroom for necessities. Or in spots in your home where it is for decoration only or where it is for both!

Useful Places To Use A Tiered Tray
- In the bathroom – Use a tiered tray to double or triple your counter space. Set small jars of Qtips, cotton balls, bobby pins, hair ties etc. on the tiered trays. Use it for hand towels, decorative soaps, or other necessities.
- At the coffee bar – On the tier tray place sugars, stirrers, coffee cups, k cups, hot cocoa packets and tea bags. You can use coffee cups and small bowls to arrange everything neatly.
- For The Office – Just think of all the small office supplies you could store in a visually pleasing way on a tiered tray! Jars of clips, pins and washi tape. Boxes of pens, scissors and refills. Oh my!
Use The Tiered Tray For Decor
- I have a tiered tray on my kitchen counter. It cuts down on clutter as we walk in the door – there is no where on the counter for a drop zone so we are forced to put everything away. A cute tier tray is so much better than a pile of clutter!
- I have a tiered tray on my stair landing which is Amory’s shoe drop zone. It adds a decorative touch to this functional spot.
- Living Room – tiered trays are great for side tables and fireplace hearths
- Dining Room – a fantastic idea is to use the tiered tray as a centerpiece or on a sideboard

Pastel Tiered Tray Ideas For Valentine’s Day
The tiered tray in our kitchen got a makeover for Valentine’s Day and I want to share that with you for some inspiration!
Remember the swan picture that was our anchor piece? I used pinks, blues and golds to create a swan themed Valentine tiered tray.
I added a jar of flowers, pink wooden hearts and a gold wooden bead strand to this tray with my swan picture.
On this level you can see why I added gold to the color mix. For these beautiful brass swans and the words “love you” on this small wooden shelf sitter. Vintage inspired flash cards from the How Does Your Garden Grow Set and the Hocus Pocus Set along with bottles and flowers complete the vignette on this tray.
On this level of the tiered tray gold is continued in the footed bowl of hearts as well as in the flower frog that holds a vintage Valentine in the blue color that has been repeated in bottles and books. Another wooden shelf sitter is on this tray. If you want to make a small sign for your tiered tray this craft is simple, easy and oh so cute! And one last thing I added was a beaker of pink wooden beads in honor of Love Potion Number Nine.
