Laundry Room Makeover For The One Room Challenge
In today’s post, I’m starting a laundry room makeover for the One Room Challenge. I’m sharing my design board and what projects I’ll accomplish in the upcoming weeks.
What Is The One Room Challenge?
The One Room Challenge is a biannual design event where Featured Designers and Guest participants are tasked with making over a space in eight weeks.
The designers participating are making over everything from pantries to garages and everything in between in this One Room Challenge. I encourage you to head over – there is so much inspiration!
I will be making over my very brown, very not functional laundry room. When we moved into our little cottage in the city everything was brown. I believe the previous homeowner went to the hardware store got all they had in shades of brown. So far we have banished the brown in the half bath downstairs and in the kitchen with paint and faux shiplap. The common areas are painted with Sherwin Williams Site White which has gotten rid of the weird brown peach color. It has seriously brightened up our home. And now I’m ready to make my laundry room a prettier, bright spot since it’s right off the kitchen/dining nook.

The Laundry Room Before
I am embarrassed to show you these photos but you’ll never know how amazing the end is without the beginning, am I right?
The walls are a weird peachy brown. The previous homeowner had attached pieces of wood to the walls that circled the entire room with large nails sticking out every inch or so. I removed the wood and nails early on when we moved into this house. You can see the large white racing stripe it left behind.
A few things will be returning to the room like the chicken nesting box and wall hooks made from salvaged wood. Here are two great projects to make your own wall hooks – on a shutter and on salvaged wood.
The Design Behind The One Room Challenge Makeover
The laundry room will get a refresh with a wall paper treatment above and shiplap below, a vintage hanging light, laundry room prints designed by me, and increased functionality.
Our lives are centered around goats with frequent trips to the barn. The resulting mess that creates demands an efficient laundry space and storage for cleaning supplies.
The Projects For The Laundry Room Makeover For The One Room Challenge
The To do list
- Fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Site White.
- A wall treatment for the upper third of the walls featuring wall paper.
- Shiplap for the lower two thirds of the wall.
- A shelf over the washing machine and dryer.
- Return the chicken nesting box with new tags to use that to it’s best potential.
- Organize large cleaning supplies.
- Create functional storage for large laundry room supplies (ironing board and drying rack).
- Flooring – this could possibly be updated. (Still on the fence about this one!).
