What You Need To Know To Decorate The Top Of A China Cabinet
This post is all about what you need to know to decorate the top of a china cabinet. I have bit of Spring fever and have been feathering and fluffing my nest. I redid the entryway, the mantle has pastel Spring vibes and I added some Spring to my china cabinet.
The Tricks You Need To Know For Decorating Above Cabinets
The B Method
- Before you start
- Clean the top of your cabinet really well. Vacuum the dust away and wipe down thoroughly.
- My china cabinet has molding on the top. I place books and empty boxes on the top so when I place my pretty things they do not get lost behind the molding.
- Work from the back to the front
- Fill in your decor from the wall your cabinet sits on to the front of your cabinet. Lean pictures, mirrors, windows, signs or other flat pieces against the wall and work towards the front edge of your cabinet.
- Use big pieces
- This is the time to go big! A lot of small pieces would give a cluttered feel instead of a cohesive feel to the cabinet.
- Belong together
- Choose a common colors, three max, that belong together. Pull these colors from the room your china cabinet sits in, the season you are decorating for or the holiday you’re celebrating.
- Choose textures, three max, that repeat through the top of the china cabinet.
Decorate The Top Of Your China Cabinet Back To Front
When I started decorating I placed this empty frame in the back leaning against the wall. This post has great ideas and details on how to repurpose frames – I cannot pass up a good solid wood frame anymore!
Working towards the front I put a large apothecary jar filled with silver footed bowls, green glass bottles, birds and a spindle. I had previously used these spindles to make this craft, I removed the flag and saved it to staple on next summer.
Decorate The Top of Your China Cabinet With Big Pieces
On the top of the china cabinet I used big pieces that were repeated all the way across the china cabinet in other groupings. These pieces were large baskets, silver teapots, that apothecary jar (I love that thing – it’s even held marshmallows!), and wooden spindles.
Decorate The Top Of Your China Cabinet With Pieces That Belong together
I chose three colors to use throughout decorating the top of the cabinet – white, green and tan. The white was found in the spindles, birds and the book (in the basket). The green was the predominant color in the lamb’s ear, the bottles and even on some leaves on the book. Tan was repeated through the baskets, in the burlap around the tops of the bottles, and in one spindle in the basket.
Textures used in decorating the groupings were tarnished silver, woven textures of the baskets and the softness of the lamb ears.
