Easy DIY Small Home Office Makeover On A Budget
The spare room in my home was first the guest room of all guest rooms for my dad when he visited. Last year I added a cozy home office nook to its corner with open shelves I created from table leaves. The Fifth Sparrow No More has come a long way and soon outgrew this home office set up in a small space. I then completed an easy DIY small home office makeover on a budget to give myself a dedicated office space for diy projects, storage for booth inventory, a place to ship the vintage decorative items I sell online and a work area to create vintage flashcards.
Home Office Desk On A Budget
The desk in this home office space used to be something completely different. Its first purpose was the leaf to a dining table. This was sanded down and the paint color I chose was pink, of course. Vintage treadle sewing machine legs were attached underneath. I used a dowel rod at the bottom of the legs to further stabilize it.
This is a large work surface that gives me dedicated space to complete projects. A ring light sits on the corner and my tripod clamps to the desk. A large window is close by for natural light. It is easy to clear my project away to set up my laptop and continue work on my computer screen.
A comfortable desk chair was a must. A great option is to look on Amazon for an office chair, another great way to find one is Facebook Marketplace. Often an office chair will be bought online or at an office furniture store, assembled and doesn’t work for the person. They will often choose to sell it rather than take it apart and return it. This is a great way to get a chair for not much money and that is how I got mine! I will share the Amazon link below – it is the most comfortable chair.

Budget Home Office Ideas For Organization
This home office needs a storage space for the inventory for the items for my storefront booth and online sales. I shop year round from thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales and rummage sales to buy vintage pieces to sell and for my own home.
Since this extra room doesn’t have too much space, a great way to have maximum storage is to use vertical storage. A simple solution was to use bookcases that I got for free. However, getting my budget-friendly way of adding organization into my office makeover turned out to be a daunting task. There was not enough space to get the seven foot bookcases around the corner in the small space of my hallway. My daughter and I took them back downstairs and I had one of my great ideas. I made the decision to cut them in half. Yes, in half. I was thankful for my daughter and her math skills because she was instrumental in cutting them in half equally.
The bookcases were placed against the office walls and there they sat. I wanted an affordable way to make them look like a built-in in my home office space. In a perfect home office situation I would have beautiful built-ins as a focal point, but a diy home decor project like that was not in the budget for this home office design.
My first step was to find inexpensive cabinets at a local thrift store to set the bookcases on. They would get a lot of use and carry a lot of items so they needed to be in good shape and sturdy. My search led me to the Habitat For Humanity Restore where I found not one file cabinet but two. They were long, low and heavy duty. They were perfect to set the bookcases on to make this a functional home office. And the best part was they were only forty dollars!
Eventually the bookcases will get a fresh coat of paint so the bookcases will match the file cabinets better. Right now I use baskets from Hobby Lobby to corral all of my things on the shelves and inside the drawers.
I placed the last bookcase on a dresser I already had. Once again the first thing this set up needs is a new paint job. It’s on the to-do list but the new space is functional if not Pinterest picture perfect.
Inside the dresser is more storage for small pieces which I keep in small baskets.
