Make Wood Gingerbread Houses For The Best Christmas Village

/ / /

It’s a fair bet that my kitchen / dining room will be decorated with a gingerbread theme this holiday season. It was last year, it is this year and will most likely be next year! And although I do the same theme each Christmas season, I always have so much fun mixing it up and creating a new look for my Christmas decor each year. This year I decided to make wood gingerbread houses for the best Christmas village display.

I gave new life to small wood houses that were thrift store finds to make a little village on my pink tiered tray. This easy tutorial was fun and simple and using just paint!

Great Ideas For Wooden Houses For Gingerbread Houses

The following are all great project pieces to turn into gingerbread houses for your own Christmas village.

  • Visit the local craft store for different styles of wooden houses.
  • Wood birdhouses are a great place to start when making your miniature Christmas village – gingerbread style.
  • Small woodblock homes (like I used) can be found at local thrift stores and online.
  • These different houses from Woodpeckers Crafts are made from natural wood and can be used in a holiday village, as shelf sitters or ornaments for your Christmas trees.
  • The next best thing are paper mache houses, ones you craft from a piece of cardboard, the ceramic Christmas houses from the Dollar Tree store or create from scrap wood.

Step-by-Step Tutorial To Make Wood Gingerbread Houses For The Best Christmas Village

Step 1

I first cleaned my little houses. A great way to do this is with a little soap and water.

Step 2

The next step was to use the color root beer from Colorshot to spray paint my small houses. It took two light coats to cover them.

Step 3

After letting that dry I used pink paint, you can use acrylic paint that matches your color scheme as an accent. I painted the roofs or the walls pink on each one of my miniature houses.

Step 4

When the pink paint had dried I dry brushed white paint all over the houses to tone down the brown and create fake snow (in my mind) on all of them.

Step 5

To finish them I used a puffy metallic paint in white to create roof line and shingles, windows, doors, and drippy faux snow on some.

Display Wood Gingerbread Houses In The Best Christmas Village On A Tiered Tray

A wonderful way to display your entire village of DIY Christmas village houses is on a tiered tray. On this tiered tray I displayed the smaller houses among vintage finds and new houses I purchased. (Well new to me, anyway!).

The Top Tier Of The Tray

I placed the “barn” from my wooden Christmas village, a large felt gingerbread ornament, and a tin toy tart pan (say that 10 times fast!) on this first tray.

I found an easy way to attach the ceramic gingerbread ornaments that I thrifted to the tart pan. The wood bottom of bottle brush trees (I don’t throw anything away!) came in handy as a way to affix the ornaments to each small space in the pan.

Simple Steps To Create A Tart Pan For Your Tiered Tray

Use your hot glue gun to place a small amount to glue the wood scraps to the ornaments then another dab to place it into the pan.

The Second Tier Of The Tray

The “church” of my little town is on a small riser and one more of the smaller houses is up front and center with a larger gingerbread house. A copper cookie cutter and another toy tin baking pan round out this tray.

The Bottom Tier Of The Tray

This tray has projects from last year’s gingerbread projects. A faux book stack and rolling pins created with that DIY pair with an amber bottle, a copper cookie cutter and more small gingerbread houses. A larger pink house finishes off this tray.
