How To Easily Make A Bench From A Thrifted Table

/

Have you ever found one forgotten small nightstand or end table in the thrift store? One without its mate, super inexpensive because of that and in really good shape? I am telling you now when you do, buy it! Because I am sharing how to easily make a bench from a thrifted table in this post.

This table turned seating can be used for –

  • Extra seating in the living room, place a tray or large coffee table book on top to use it as a table.
  • In a small entryway. The drawer is left intact for a place for keys, etc.
  • For a bedroom – this is a great piece to tuck in a corner.

I chose the Ottertex® Waterproof Canvas from Fabric Wholesale Direct for two specific reasons. One – convenience. It was so easy to go to their website and find what I needed. I live in east Tennessee in a very small town and driving to Knoxville for fabric without knowing if I could find it is not my idea of fun. Second the fact that it cleans so easily. The waterproof fabric has a plastic backing that makes spill clean up super easy.

Steps To Easily Make A Bench From A Thrifted Table

Step 1

  • I traced the table top around the base. This gave me a line of where the fabric should be stapled and for it to stop so the base would cover the staples and raw fabric edges.
  • The top was removed from the base by unscrewing two screws per side. I set the base aside.

Step 2

  • I measured the table top to determine if I needed to cut the foam down.
  • The foam was cut down a bit, I just used scissors but an electric knife would work (probably better!)
  • Spray the foam adhesive on one side to attach it to the table.

Step 3

  • Place a piece of batting over the foam.
  • Flip the table top over in order to staple it to the table top.
  • Staple along the line you made so those staples will be under the base.
  • Fold the corners, gathering and trimming batting to make a neat corner.

Step 4

  • Place the foam and batting covered table top down on the fabric, making sure your pattern is straight.
  • Flip this over and staple opposite sides first then work on your corners, trimming fabric so that your corners are neat.
  • Reattach the table top with the original screws.

After I finished covering the table top I set it aside to work on the base. I painted the base with Midnight Sky chalk paint. It’s a black with a very dark blue undertone. It worked perfectly with this plaid fabric. I also replaced the old handle with an adjustable handle. You can watch this video to see how those adjustable handles are installed. So easy if you don’t want to fill old hardware holes and make new ones!

The Finished Bench I Made From A Thrifted Table

I am really happy with how this turned out! It is a great repurpose and a new life for a $10 table destined for the landfill.
