A Spring Look For The Top Of Your China Cabinet
Are you ready for Spring? I put some spring into my step and my home and I want to share how to create a spring look for the top of your china cabinet. These ideas can be used above armoires, bookcases, and hutches. Any tall furniture really! I will share my easy step by step method that will make this super simple and stress free.
The Method To Decorating A China Cabinet Top
The B Method
- Before you start
- Spring clean the top of your cabinet really well. Vacuum the dust away and wipe down thoroughly.
- My china cabinet has molding on the top. I place books and empty boxes on the top so when I place my pretty things they do not get lost behind the molding.
- Work from the back to the front
- Fill in your pieces from the wall your cabinet sits on to the front of your cabinet. Lean pictures, mirrors, windows, signs or other flat pieces against the wall and work towards the front edge of your cabinet.
- Use big pieces
- This is the time to go big! A lot of small pieces would give a cluttered feel and not a a cohesive feel to the cabinet.
- Belong together
- Choose common colors, three max, that belong together. Pull these colors from the room your china cabinet sits in.
- Choose textures that belong together, three max, that repeat through the top of the china cabinet.

Getting A Spring Look For The Top Of Your China Cabinet
Decorate The Top Of Your China Cabinet Back To Front
To begin I placed an oval magnolia print against the wall at the back of my china cabinet. I created this magnolia print from a drop cloth, a transfer and a thrifted frame I painted. This post has great ideas and details on how to repurpose frames – I cannot pass up a good solid wood frame anymore!
Working towards the front I used two vintage silver coffee pots and a book in the same colors as my magnolia print. I absolutely love using old books in my decorating – there are so many beautiful colors and themes to use. One coffee pot sits on cake stand (see my favorite ones here).
At the very front of the cabinet I placed a lamb’s ear garland.
Decorate The Top of Your China Cabinet With Big Pieces
On the top of the china cabinet I used a big piece that repeated the colors I was using, creating a cohesive look. The big piece I used was this apothecary chest.
I had been using it on my fireplace hearth for every season but felt it could use a spring refresh.
I tucked a roll of crochet thread and button cards in an apothecary chest drawer. On top of the chest I placed another book and in front of the chest I placed two jadeite cups that continues the color theme.
Decorate The Top Of Your China Cabinet For Spring With Pieces That Belong Together
I chose three colors to use throughout decorating the top of the cabinet – cream, green and grey (or silver). The cream was found in the magnolia print, button cards, crochet thread, cake stand and book. The green is found in the frame and the magnolia print, the books, the lamb’s ear, and the jadeite mugs. Grey (or silver) is found in the vintage silver coffee pots, in the apothecary chest, the books and the print.
Textures that were used to give a soft vintage spring look were tarnished silver, rustic chippiness of the apothecary chest and the softness of the lamb ears.
